There is a small chapter on a flat back loop in the new EJ's Advanced Playboating. May be U can get your hands on that.

the ez series are pretty easy to roll, it shouldnt be a problem although practice always helps.

I always pull at least one roll in a new boat before I take it down the river. For me it is just kind of a warm up and christening of the boat. I work at a shop and have rolled the ez, ezg, project, crazy 88... and really haven't noticed a big difference in any river play boat. A creek boat is a different monster but other than that.

a creek boat is the easiest thing in the world to roll. They have been designed to be able to roll with the least effort..... ;)

When i got my playboat (S6!!) i could only roll a boat that was basically a tube, in a nice warm pool, with many people around to rescue me if i needed it. First time i tried to roll my S6 in a river was a real shock, needless to say, i didnt come up! You've got to expect that a flat hulled playboat is gunna be a lot harder to roll than either a pool boat or most centre boat. It will rely much more on technique though, so it is better to perfect ur skills in the pool boat, then take them onto your nice shiny new playboat!
Also, to make your roll bombproof, thus meaning that your playboating skills advance more quickly, steal (beg,borrow....) any boats you see lying around and try rolling them.
Just my thoughts!

Yes a creek boat is easy to roll. I have seen many a new paddler roll it right back over and then wet exit. Hence my comment above.

I believe playboating is more than river running. At this point I would like to learn the roll , and some tricks but even running rivers is tough without a roll. I have been practicing a low brace but the inability to roll keeps me from trying anything remotely precarious. I have a pool session tomorrow and will work on it then.
Surfing is a neat thing. I have surfed a little bit by pealing out of an eddy, and trying to pull myself into the wave. I have watched others turn around and drop right into a practiaclly effortless surfing position. How is that done?

Hope this makes you feel better.

Went out this evenin, and made my first couple of eskimo rolls, after 3 years of tryin... Experts told me and showed me how to do it (short of beating me with a big stick) but I just couldn't do manage it. But it all came together today  . I managed the pawlata roll after about 2 years, ( the first time I did it was, through sheer anger and frustration).

I had been paddling a Perception Corsica S 12ft long, but have just bought a Prijon Luv (8ft surf/playboat). Im not sure if this helped or not, maybe it was just coincidental.

Anyway, the thing is I have finally done it after a lot of practice, numerous rescues and plenty of swimming.

Keep trying and dont give up.........

I didnt learn to roll for 3 yrs of paddling. This made me really good at using support strokes. I have noticed that some people learn to roll too early in their progression and thus spend more time upside down than necessary.

My point to all of this is, being able to roll isnt an absloutly necessary skill for river running. Playboating on the other hand, I would say not essential as you can swim and empty. However, I would add that playboating is all about getting flipped. In order to learn you will get dumped over so it is up to you. If you want to learn to playboat and dont mind swimming every time you go over, have at it.

I would say that your first playboating trick shoud be the \"roll\"... After all, it always impresses the non kayakers out there

EJ has a rolling and bracing DVD that you can find at www.jacksonkayak.com

look it up and practice with someone who can roll, you'll pick up less bad habbits.

i learned to roll in a Liquidlogic Ronin 49, but then i got back into my my old Wavesport Evo, and i found it easier just because my Wavesport is a longer, narrower boat than the Ronin.
you may need practice just to get the feel of things, but it shouldnt be like starting from scratch.
longer boats are easier to roll (for me at least) than wider, shorter ones.
