I am a novice paddler and I am looking at getting a fluid nemesis M. I am currently 6ft, 205lbs and have a limited roll. I am a fast learner and I am looking to see if this boat is a good choice. I am looking at getting into mostly playboating with the occasional class 3-4 river running. Is the nemesis easy to roll? is this boat difficult to paddle (am I gonna be spending larger amounts of time upside down)? how is the boat gonna be in the flats as I spend time at my camp and there is no whitewater there at all? I can run a river and do all the ferry stuff but what I lack in is the playboating department. I have come off some nasty shoulder injuries and it has in essence killed my roll for the most part (it is coming back quickly though) so I am lookign for a boat that will aid me in that transition a little easier.

Well. I'm a novice paddler and I find the Nemesis easy to roll.

I have first-hand experience with the WS ZG and the Jackson Star and AllStar. I find the Nemesis to roll easier than the ZG and AllStar and about the same as the Star.

I love the boat on the wave (don't have any comparison there though - see my 'review' for that) I got eaten a bit by a hole last weekend, but I'll put that down to it being my first time in a hole and the hole being quite retentive.

Looking at your size and weight, I'd go for a L Nemesis instead of the M though. Especially if you want to be doing some river running with it. What do you think Adrian?

Hey thanks for the info and as for the weight (i am at my heaviest and should be down to about 190 by june)..... I drop weight fast!! The weight is due to inactivity thanks to multiple dislocated shoulders and now that I am back to the weights and running all will be better!!!

I'm 6' and about 187 lbs with no clothes. So no dry top, spraydeck, PFD, water bottle, throw bag and what not. With all that gear it would be a lot more. I paddle the medium and have no problems. Check out my review on the boat:
playak.com/go/Nemesis_review

Flat water at that weight will be a breeze. The large would be too big. The large should step into full production in one to two months time and is not available at present.

Class 3/4 big volume, no problem in that boat. Class 3/4 with lots of exposed rocks and more technical lines, big problem... :skull: It's important to match your boat with the river conditions you're faced with. Play boats have no place on creeks.

I've written a very comprehensive article on choosing your boat as a beginner but am waiting for someone to still proof it to make sure it is easy to understand and also waiting for computer images of Fluid's new boat....... :woohoo:  :cheer: So standby for the article in the next 2 to 3 weeks. B)

(Those shoulders don't sound good! Hit the gym using excellent technique, warming up etc, play by the rules and you'll be styling in no time. ;) Good luck! I've never dislocated a shoulder but have had a problem and finally tmrw morning I'm getting an MRI to get to the root of the problem and end 10 months of pain. Shouldn't have been stubborn (or stupid) in the first place and sorted it out when it happened. )

Hey Adrian,

Thanks man for the info and the dislocations are from being a tool on a trampoline!! I put it out the first time and did the typical male thing about I don't need no stinkin' doctor. I never gave it the proper time to heal and continued to paddle and popped it out 3 more times. I have been off the water for about 9months and have no more pain!!! that is huge as the pain was inhibiting my ability to sleep and my mobility was horrible. Lots of weights, proper stretching and time off has made a world of difference. The sad part is I am a paramedic and know better!!

Thanks again and I am having a hard time between this boat and an Air60. I have paddled an air55 but it was torture to my feet and it was a little low in the drink. I like the air series but I am curious to weather people have paddled the air60 and how it would be?

Hi James,

I don't know the Air at all. Here's a comparison between the Air and the Nemesis.

playak.com/kayaks.php?id2=118&id=604

Just by looking at the volume I'd guess it would be harder to throw the air around on the flats. It will require more muscle to throw it around. I had a 60 gallon river runner which is longer/slicier than the air and it was reasonably hard to flat water cartwheel.. I'm not a Riot fan at all but if I had to choose a Riot I'd rather go for the Astro. :) I believe the Air has limited foot room. A friend of mine has two that he uses for teaching people. They tend to complain about footroom..

Too bad you cannot demo a Nemesis. It's a sweet boat. Look at the survey on the front page. Plenty of people buying boats without ever testing them...
