Lanky Playboater 17 years 5 months ago #19476

Hi All
My son is 5'11\" and heading to 6'+. He is 14 and 135lbs and is progressing quickly in the sport. He is very keen to get into playboating but boats that he fits in (>32\" inseam) are usually high volume (55 gallons +) this makes it tough to start the tricks.

My question is does anyone have experience with a playboat with lower volume (<=45galls) and a similar physique??
Appreciate any help

you could squash a boat that is long enough for him.

Hi,

being 6'4\" with a 36\" inseam myself I know the problem. I am a bit heavier than your son but also more than double his age ;)

I paddle a Fluid Flirt Medium, it's 52 gallons and I have plenty of room. Granted, it's not the latest design but it works for whatever I like and it's a decent river runner too.

Of course it's all about demoing boats but if you can, try the Flirt and perhaps even the small Fluid Nemesis. Adrian Tregoning (also on this forum) has paddled one and he is 6' + I think.

One general rule may be: most modern short playboats have more foot/legroom than the older slicier ones. Although it may look like the volume is too high you will find that due too the short length lots of tricks are easier to do, even on flatwater.

Just my 2 cents and hope it helps,

Michiel

The small Nemesis will be a little smaller than the small Fluid Flirt. I fitted into a proto type but it's important to remember that the production version of any proto boat is always a touch smaller. Try out the small Flirt. I can fit into one and I'm 6 foot 185lbs. Of course it is WAY too small for me and doesn't float very high but it just goes to show that you can fit in.

Good luck with your boat choice. Try as many boats are you possibly can and keep an open mind. River runners will have more leg room but their playability is more limited.. ;-)

You may laf and as you said its got alot of volume but a liquid logic big wheel is a good shout. I was in the same boat as your son at aged 13 and a big wheel sort my tricks out. Second hand Big wheel are not badly priced.
