New to freestyle- Where do I start? 17 years 11 months ago #15680

Hi,
I bought a Pyranha S6x Last week, and I have used it twice. I am very comfortable with the boat and I am happy with it! I know it is a freestyle boat, but I don't know any moves! Can anyone tell me where to start? I am 14 almost 15, and I would really appreciate it if someone could give me some advice!

Brad

Buy a instructional DVD like 'EJs playboating basics', but obviously the best way to learn is from other paddlers.

start with the basic front surf, move from side to side on the wave, then do it all backwards once you comfy try changing from front to back and figure out the weight changes for you and your boat and slowly but surly you will get a complete 360 rotation or a flat spin then try doing this with less strokes. Obivously you will need a nice play wave to practise on. try and get out with some of the more experienced paddlers from your club there must be a few playboaters in there. Get a playboat dvd ken Whitings is a good place to start or Eric Jacksons Basics playboating

what features are near you? Waves? Holes?...Flatwater? For waves front and backsurfing are good starts, and same for a hole, although it is a bit different in a hole. If all you can get to is a pool or something, try learning to flatwater carthweel, that will act as sort of a gateway to more advanced moves. i wont go into as to how to flatwater cartwheel, as there already a bilion threads on how to do this.

Well here in wales we only have a 4% river access for kayakers:cursing:
So I am trying to find a place where I can get on the river, and get off.
I think have found a hole and some flatwater, but we do not know weather it has privat or public access to that area(it is under a bridge). I will seek out these cartweel threats

Hey Brad,
If you can, try to join a club or just find a group of people to paddle with, i really find i learn things better from watching other people and also being pushed further by friendly competition with them.
There's quite a few threads on here already about learning moves, so run a quick search and that shud help a bit!
Good luck, if u can try and get to the youth freestyle events this year, they offer useful coaching and the competition is so relaxed, it really doesn't matter about your skill level!
See you there hopefully!

I am a member of the local club, but they are bassed in the pool and they do alot of canoe polo, not freestyle. So I will try and get to these events that youhave mentioned, and WOW your pyranha is PINK! Mine is Green, not so WOW but it is cool:roflol:

Haha, i prefer 'weathered red'- makes me sound a bit less camp....lol. Yeap, the S6 series are great boats to learn in, that one taught me nearly everthing i know....sigh...
Next youth freestyle is at HPP i think, sumtime in september, hope i'll be there, but sadly not in a pink boat...

It is probably the camera/ editing making the red look more pink:)

Yeap, Urge has got it right, sadly Pyranha don't make boats in pink i belive....just the sun on the boat i think that gives the effect.

Considered spray paint? OK if it got scratched it would look crap but would it work?

Hmm its an idea, ive spraypainted a helmet before and even though it had layer upon layer of varnish lovingly coated on it, it scratched up awfully and now looks really terrible, assume a boat would be similar. Also you have the problem that comes with adding solvents to plastic (please correct me if im wrong) and the weakening of the plastic that can create. I remember some australian guy had his boat painted specially though, don't know how or if he even used it....
Hows the playboating going?

Well the river is a bit low atm
So my dad will be going up llandysul tomorrow to see weather the water is high enough for some fun!
If so on sunday Me, Joel(my brother) and my dad will go to llandysul to do a bit of paddeling!
If it is too shallow we will wait for the roof rack to arrive and we will try the ocean!

Well I have now taken most of your advice!
I have bought a DVD
And joined an active club where I can go, on tuesdays for instructed club nights, so I will paddle with other playboaters!
I also went down llandysul today and had a good run of the strech a few times!
I managed to get my back end caught in a rapid and started going down...luckly I got out of it, i was shocked when I turned around to try and get my back end into one place, but the current moved me into a wave of water and pulled me down! The first time I capsized, but the second time I did it I managed to get out:dance:

Whatever you do, don't paddle by yourself, just not safe. Especially as a novice. One great thing you'll eventually see about kayaking, is that we are all one big family. We are all connected to eachother somehow. You can't learn to kayak without others as teachers.

start with surf moves and double pump.

you will eventually be forced to chance that kayak for one with more volume. The air volume inside the kayak helps you with the air move by making pressure against the water. It's just like when you try to push a ballon deep into the water. It will just pump up.

hope that helps you right

Stern squirts, back deck rolls, bow stalls then cartwheels. Should keep you occupied for a while.

Oh yeah, hand rolling's a must to, remember, the younger you learn to do it, the less lightly
you are to forget it.
