Let me tell you... lying on a board, paddling out with a kayaker in front of you is... very scary. I'm a kayaker, and I think its scary. imagine a surfer...

The problem as was said, is that sometimes kayakers, even the best, get back looped and fall down the wave and then tumble to the beach plowing everything in its path - breaking everything in its path - boards, and bodies.

Not only do we need to be ULTRA sensitive to the etiquet catching waves, and if in doubt, give up MORE than our fair share - but also on the paddle out. LOOK BEHIND YOU... is there a surfer also trying to get out - move to the side 10m and then keep paddling out. This lets the guy know that you're aweare he's there, and you're doing your bit. Easier for you to move over than him.

Give some a ride out... let him grab your loop and pull one out a few times - be cool.

But never forget... to a surfer, you're a scary 18 wheel semi truck on a bicycle track...

Yeah... well surfers are totally clueless people who don't understand the sport of kayaking. They don't know how interesting and thrilling it can be... And if they don't understand they might as well f***k off... Where i'm from there aint no bond between surfers and kayakers...

im not a surfer personally but i do know a few surf kayakers. they jus sorta try to stay outa each othas way and they have never had any problems as far as i know. i spose the best thing u could do if a surfa "has a go" jus ignore him - theres nothing he can do cuz u can jus run him down bein in a bigger boat and all

Well said. What I´ve experienced is that usually boardsurfers outnumber the kayakers in the water / on the land, so what can you do when when surfing by yourself ? Surfers know, when the window for good waves opens and they use it up more or less totally, because they are more local than you.

A kayaker doesn´t usually have that extra "few weeks" to waste into initiation, or whatever bullshitprocess that is. So the best option is to stay out of their way, unless you have some friends to back you, if things turn ugly.

On popular breaks it´s not a "I respect you, you respect me"-game, unfortunately.

It's just like in the snow where you've got the skiiers verses sno boarders crap.. Your all riding the same medium and doing similar if not the same moves.
I've seen and heard a lot of surfers exchange snide comments to each other on my arrival out the back. But if you play by the rules, be friendly and polite, and most importantly absolutly style a wave under their noses generly a begrudging level of repect will come your way.
Every body is out there ultumitly for the same purpose, so be at piece with your fellow wave rider.
