warped hull in kayak, much of a problem? 15 years 6 months ago #28217

Hi,

im looking for asecond hand play boat.

I have managed to find a dagger kingpin which is just what i want.

However looking at the pictures he has sent me the kayak has a couple of warped patches on the hull.

Is this much of problem?

Iv read in quite a few places that you can easily fix this by just heating it a tiny bit and pushing back to its orginal position.

cheers

Hi

can you post the photos of it for us? Might be easier for someone to diagnose if you can?

If its a fold in the boat, say in the bow or stern, you've got to ask what has caused it. Could be the boat was pinned and the boat folded, or it could be an impact with a rock, tree or similar. this will obviously weaken the boat and it could fold again, possibly with your legs inside it!

If its under the seat or just in front its probably "oil canning". This happens in boats and i have also read many posts on it, and the views are mixed on wether it is "fixable" or not.

I think im right in saying its caused by the fact that the weight is in the centre of the boat and the buoyancy at the ends and over time as you scrape the bottom it wears away and becomes weak. "oil canning also can be caused by tying the boat hull down on roof racks etc, if the straps are to tight.

Im sure someone else can contribute or put me right if thats not totally accurate.

Matt

Sounds like oil canning to me. Unless it's a spot directly under the seat that you can force out by shoving in some foam underneath to bump it out, you will not be able to fix it. It's not a huge problem though and a lot of people still kayak with boats like that. I'm sure it affects performance, but to the degree that the average kayaker could pick up on, I couldn't say for sure... A bump would make the hull slightly less stiff already and that will affect performance. I'm no pro though.

It's a design fault on some boats and some are more prone to it than others - has to do with the radii of the hull, both length ways and across - none of them are totally flat, of course... ;) But they are large so upon quick inspection they appear flat. Unless the price is really awesome, might be worth it to shop around.

Sometimes it is possible to push them pout by warming the plastic depending on the size etc. would be easier to say if we could actually see that damaged boat. It may evem be possible to remove the damaged setion and plastic weld in a new one. Cheers. Greg

The patches are in the center of the hull.

Its a dagger kinpin 6.3, he says its scratched on the bottom, plus the warped patches and is selling for £290. Is it worth it?

I have got pix, but they were sent to my phone, and i cant put them on the computer, if anyone wants me to send them via text im more then happy to do so.

I have found a pyranha s6 200 for £250. Might just go for that, however i dont want one that is too big for me to do anything in. Im 90 kgs.

cheers

Patche(s)???

I think everyone wants a good boat for the right money, so if it has more than 1 bad patch you might want to stay away? :(
I think the s6 is sounding like a good bet if its in reasonable condition for the money. A guy at my local club paddles one, he swears by them and has had 3 in a row or something like that. Your well in the weight range at 90kg, the 200 is for paddlers between 70-100kg so you should find it easy to throw around.

As with anything check it over and try and demo if possible.

Good luck

Matt

Checkon the pics the chap sent you of the dents/patches. If there is any discolorationof the plastic in the affected areas I would not go for the kayak as those are from hard impacts.
If you do decide to take it and need some advice on how to get your flatness back letr me know.
