Shred Ready says 3 years or after any big hit. If it is plastic and seems to be wearing down and/or losing structural integrity, definitely replace it.

Depends on the helmet, a plastic one should probably be replaced every second year or so depending on how much use and how it was stored. A composite helmet you could get much more use out of as long as it is stored properly and hasn't sustained any damage. I just noticed a small crack in one of my composite helmets so its going to be retired.

As a rule of thumb climbing helmets made from plastic last 5 years and climbing helmets made from composite 10 years. But as already stated depends how you use it, how it has been stored, any impacts etc. If in doubt change it.

I just use mine until anything starts to go/look wrong or broken

Should probably replace it next year though :)
