Futaleufu questions.... 16 years 5 months ago #24008

Hi guys,
Was wondering if anyone here could give me some info on the Fu.
Particularly, what time of year is good to go there? I was thinking a trip around January...
How hard is it? i know it's big water, but reading the guide book suggests it is class 2-6... that's a big range. Is the harder stuff portagable? How does it compare to stuff like the Zam and White Nile?
What is the grading system like? Is it 'cushy African grading' or 'NZ grading'?
Do most people do day trips, or can you do most of the river in a big long stretch?

Any outfitters that you would suggest?
Lastly, if you had the choice, would you go to the Fu, creeking in Chile, Ecuador or Costa Rica? I'll be in Lima, so flying to any of those places is probably reasonable.

Thanks for any ideas you guys have!

Would highly recomend Bio-Bio Adventures. During our trip thru Chile and Argentina we Spent a week with them in Jan of 06' and had a great time. Ran several of the other local rivers besides the Fu (which there is a thin guide book on out there) , Azul, Espolon etc... They have a great camp, great food, wood fired hot tub, and are really good, down to earth folks (not full of themselves like some in the area!!!) They also make a killer Pisco Sour!!

Grading seems to be pretty comp. to the U.S.

While we were there flows fluctuated wildly with the weather. Many different options for access on the Fu and most companies will run shuttle for you.

As for my choice, big water vs. creeking??? Not a fair question! Always Creeking, it ROCKS!!!!!! (just my take)

I too would recommend Bio Bio. I've been on several trips with them - including a 5 day trip on the Zam - and they are incredible. The Fu is their signature trip. They have a whole adventure base camp on the river with a hot tub and yoga platform and such. Check out their website - www.bbxrafting.com. They've been doing trips down there for years and I'm sure they'd be able to answer any of your questions. Have fun!

Hi Stef,
I can without reservation endorse my own company on the Futaleufu, Bio Bio Expeditions as your one stop shopping destination to get on the Fu with great fellow kayakers, great selection of boats, easy shuttle logistics and delicious meals! (open bar, hot tub, sauna, hot shower, spacious tent bungalows overlooking the river, yoga every morning-- the fun just doesn't stop!) www.bbrxrafting.com sorry for the shameless self-promoting, but I strongly believe you will have a great time with us! cheers, lars
