Sit-on top for 2 adults + 2 kids 16 years 8 months ago #22801

Looking for a kayak to fit me (six foot, 88kg/195 pounds), my wife (five foot, 55kg/120 pounds), and our two children, aged six and one.

We would be using it initially on a canal, and so might have to get it in and out of the water quite a lot.

So I guess big is good to fit the kids, but big is also bad because it's hard to transport.

Can anyone make some recommendations for suitable craft?

You could look at an inflatable kayak/canoe. the Advanced Elements Straitedge 2 looks pretty good. it will be hard to find a kayak that can hold 2 adults and 2 kids that is portable. The only other option is to get a short tandem sit on top or a folding kayak.

what sort of weight would you suggest is portable?

I've done a little research, and I've come up with the following models as being easily available in the UK:

Bic Sport Trinidad (12 foot/28.5kg), Tobago (13 foot/32kg), Kalao (14.5ft/40kg). The first two are rated 2 adults + 1 kid, the latter 2 adults + 2 kids.
Ocean Kayaks Malibu Two (12 foot/26kg), Malibu Two XL (13' 4"/27.7kg), Zest Two EXP (16' 5"/31.7kg). All 2 adults + 1kid
Perception Scooter Gemini (12' 4"/28kg). 2+1 pax.
FeelFree Tri-Yak (14' 5"/33kg) 3 adults.

The Malibu Two XL looks good.

I just need to figure out whether it is suitable for the four of us.

The other ones I saw which look nice are the Cobra range

www.cobrakayaks.co.uk/cobra-tandem---standard-57-p.asp Quite light at 27kg and should take us.

The triple is probably overkill

If you have 4 people, I would get a triple, so you can have room for 2 kids in the middle, but I would not take a 1 yr old in a kayak, until they can swim. Check out the Fluid Synergy. It is only 12' 8", but you could probably get a kid at the very front. to find it, click Leisure. fluidkayaks.com/ You could always get a tumblehome-style canoe, put some minicell foam on the floor of the boat, and let your kids sit on the hull.
