I bought a pair of Teva Karnali Wraptor sandals before heading for the Karnali (no less) this Nov. This sandal would surely be an ideal compromise, both river shoe as well as a sandal for camp - meaning you only need need carry 1 pair! Also that the semi-open sandal and the spider rubber sole would make them great for both long river days (avoid foot-rot) and safe for inspection/portage (slip-free).
I was really disappointed. The soles gave very poor grip on the Karnali rocks and caused me some 'awful' falls. Maybe this sole works well on some rock types but certainly not on those of the Karnali (after which they are named) or indeed the other rivers which we paddled afterwards.
Furthermore, the semi-open design means that sand gets in behind the straps and stays put - which leads to blisters. The Karnali is famous for its beautiful sandy bivi-beaches. Plus they dont dry-out well in the jungle humidity of the Karnali.
Dont like to badmouth products but think that this sandal is potentially dangerous which is the reason for reporting this experience here. It is also not very appropriate for use on the river after which it is named. Also reported this immediately to Teva and just got a standard reply. Have used other Teva river shoes in the past (Gamma Pro) and have been delighted with them.
