Can anyone recommend a good Paddle Jacket for NZ $250-$300 (US$200-250)? It is going to be the first piece of Paddling gear I buy...

Also, what are some things to look for when trying on/buying one?

try Peak UK. I have seen their stuff and it looks well made. When I buy a gear. I like it to have a pretty good fit. I don't want it too loose or bulky. I don't get the layering argument for looser gear because my layering hardly takes up any room. Make sure it is all seam sealed and the stiching is even. Try to get materials that won't get too water logged. I have the IR x-jacket and I really like it.

People recommended Kokatat to me for a drysuit not to long ago and it is great. So I would send you in that direction.

Kokatat makes amazing gear. It is expensive though if you go with their gor-tex offerings. Well worth the cost. If you only want to buy one top for the next 6+ years a Gor-tex Kokatat is the way to go.
