Hi, I'm relatively new to kayaking and I'm looking into buying paddles. At the moment I'm just using club ones. I'm 5 ft 10 tall and would be doing mainly river running with some play boating.

I know a lot of this is going to be personal preferences but I was hoping people could give general recommendations about things like length and feather. Also what benefit do cranks have for paddling?

From what I know: cranks are designed to reduce strain on the wrists and increase comfort. I know people who hate them though ;) Also they supposedly weaken the shaft, which makes them easier to break when running rivers.

I'm in a similar situation and have chosen the Robson Fusion with a straight shaft and a 30 degree angle. It's a pretty universal middle class paddle.

Hope that helps,
John

I recently picked up an AT4 River E to use for demos. It has a bent shaft and I went with the 197cm with a 30 degree feather. If it was just for me, I would have probably gone with a 200cm though. They also make the AT4 Play E for play boating. Anyway, the fiberglass versions are only $169, so they're hard to beat for the money.
