Newbie!! ;) Help!!!

Hey friends...i'm very new to kayaking...just learning to roll...but the obsession is getting to me! I'm looking to outfit myself in my own gear (i'm learning in a friend's great boat). I'm looking forward to meeting lots of new people and having a ton of fun in this great sport. Please feel free to drop me a line with opinions about gear and stuff...I'm a 5'7" female, about 140lbs, looking for a cross between a playboat and a river runner. Any advice about a boat or gear is very welcome! Also,… Continue

Canada Day is a lot like Independence day, One Hundred and forty-one years ago the Confederation agreement was signed uniting Canadas provinces into one Country.
Swift water course is great fun and you may want to pactice these a little. The basic knots will probabl;y be the Figure 8 in a bight( forms a loop in the end of a line),bowline (forms a loop in the end of a line that holds very well under strain ,but unties easily when unloaded) double fishermans knot( joining two ropes together or for forming a rope sling), Munter hitch ( used to control a rappel or belay or to lower a load down a slope), Tape knot or water knot (used to tie webbing together to form a sling) Thyere are of course many more useful knots but these form the core of the swift wtaer programme that I took anyway. Best advice for knots that I can give is visit this website www.animatedknots.com. I knew the knots at the site already but liked his way of doing it I bought the dvd anyway. This sight is great for learning knots and is great fun, it is free to use on the web and 20 bucks buys the dvd ,money well spend I think.
If they are not teaching the green line principle ask your instructor about it as it is one of the newer swift water developements. The green line principle teaches no knots in the handle end of a throwbag line or even a rope. In certain cases you may be required to relase your end of the throwbag line and with no knot the line stands a much better chance of flowing through the water without getting snagged. Snagged lines have pinned swimmers to the bottom and caused a few deaths , so now the newest theroy is greenline ,no knots. Ptracice throwing your bag lorts as it takes time to get good and remember when recoiling for that second throw, coil only as much line as you need to make the toss everything else is just wasted time. Cheers Greg

Not to worry its a habit I have no toubles with and the next test drink is years away, It sounded like a pretty interesting mixture and I consider the whole thing a taste experience. After all life is an adventure. Hows the knuckles? Cheers, Greg

The "Bloody Knuckle " tried one today as the only way the bartenderess would try one is if I drank one too. Crystal made it with bar lime mix which was a mistake, next time we do fresh lime and more hot sauce. When I use to drink my poison of choice was drk overproof rum and I find a lot of stuff mild compared to that. However that probably killed my taste buds as well. So at the ,moment we think were going to try another one with fresh lime and more hotsauce. We used a Asian hotsauce that we like and it is pretty warm so we were being careful, foolish I know. I'll keep you posted. Greg

Canada does have Tacp bells we even used o have one in Yellowknife, but it lasted only a few years. We have a pretty good selection of hot sauces as well and booze of every type and lots of it. I gave it up years ago however I have some friends that will be glad to test the recipe. I'll let you know the results and to be sure I'll tell them where it came from in case they want to retaliate with a recipe of their own. Greg

I must be doing something wrong as I never got any bloody knuckles but send the recipe anyway, When I drank I was famous for whhat I would drink and I tried just about everything. I have been working with Power Pazs hand paddles lately and that is something totally different. They will be great in the squirt boat.

In regards to your upcoming knife, be careful where and how you mount it on the vest. I remember the first day of my raft guiding course everyone except me lost their knifes. Sometimes the lashtabs allow the knife to hang up and get torn off when trying to enter and right the raft. Folding knife with a thrumb opening post in a PFD pocket ,maybe with a little lanyard that stays coiled in the pocket. Heres to hoping you never need the knife except to make lunch with Greg

Iwas wondering since you swam after losing your paddle, did they make you drink beer out of your wetsuit bootie. pretty standard tradition out west anyway. Everyone drinks beer from their bootie sooner or later. Cheers Greg

Marrianne I have added a picture of the pendant to the photo section on my page. I can't find a way to send attachments here. Send me a regular e-mail and if you want I will send a diagram of the Throwjug. My e mail is cominco@theedge.ca. Cheers Greg

I collect river rescue books as it is one of my favoured pasttimes and I help to train or CERT Team (Coummunity Emergency Response) I have the Bechtel and Ray, mine is copyrighted 1985. There are many good ones out there and you get get nice pocket cards fpor the Z-drag MA system from www.paddling.net. they are cheap and very handy.Ypu can practice all this stuff easily at home. I make my throwbags from empty 2 litre plastic milk jugs. They hold 50 feet of 5/16 or 3/8s rope and they fly like a rocket, much better than anything I have bought. These are very easy ti make you will have no trouble, drill a 3/8s hole in th centre of the jug bottom, next take your rope and tie a stopper knotabout 15 inches from the end and then feed this short end into the jug and out the hole. Next tie a loop in the rope sticking out the bottom of the jug, (this is mainly to stop the rope pulling out of the jug.) Noww fed the rest6 of the rope into the jug leaving enougn outside to grab and hold during the throw. These little puppies sail like rockets straight and true. I demoed one at the local pool and the lifeguards all wanted one. In the old days we would have tied a loop to hold onto but the Clean line principle is now stanard practice. Lops in the handle are no longer used because if you have to let the rope go a rope without knots stands a much better chance of flowing through the river without snagging. A snagged rope can force a person under water and pin them there. A few folks have been lost this way and now the practice is no knots on the handle end of the line.
I have plans to be your way in the nextbyear or so as I am planning stroll along the Appalachian trail in the next few years. The sceret of the throw-bag is lots of practice so build one and get busy tossing it. I can avaerage 60/65 foot throw with my big bag which is made from a stuff sack I sewed together. From a good solid stance on a good day i have hit the target at 70 feet and I am trying to get that all the time. Cheers, Greg Ps floating rope is the best and braided not 3 part nylon.
