We have kept things focused on the river this year.
A big welcome to our new print media sponsor: Do It Now magazine. This year we will have a photo and film competition, winner of the photo comp gets their photo published in the magazine for all to see. Entry is free and email entries are welcome.
For those not sure what happens at the festival, have a look below.
Pro Race: (Gr3-4) Paddle the Blyde Canyon and race down 4 of the best rapids on the section. #1 Alley’s Staircase #2 Terminator/Mark’s drop #3 Gutter2-Curtain Falls #4 Camels Humps. This year there are 2 categories: Standard race (kayak + paddle) Handi Race (kayak – paddle, paddlers may use approved hand paddles/hands). You are welcome to race in both categories at no extra cost. NB: this race is only for paddlers comfy in Gr 3 water.
Beginner & Intermediate: (Gr2-3) both will be raced on the biggest rapids of the Lower Blyde. #1 Formula 1 #2 Big Deal totaling about 400m. Rapids are generally Gr 2 or low end Gr 3 on higher levels.
King of the Gumbie: race between beginner and intermediate competitors. It’s just for fun and will require some eddie catching to score extra time removed from your total. King of the Gumby is a free event.
You can enter as a Team for the Gecko and Croc Races. Minimum 2 team members maximum 4.
Gecko Tube Race: open to everybody so you can get your non kayaking partner/friends wet as well. Raced on the same section as Beginner/Intermediate kayak races.
Croc Raft Race: open to everybody. Raced on the same section as Beginner/Intermediate kayak races.
Kayak Ramp (Big Air): Kayakers climb up the 5m tower, slide down the ramp on the other side. As you get air borne you do whatever trick you can and then land in the river. The bigger the move the better the score. The ramp this year has industrial rollers for some added speed as well as a new lip for more time in the air. This event is open to everybody.
All of the above happen on Saturday. Saturday evening is reserved for the prize giving and party!
Sunday run Olifants River.
This year we will have a Sunday fun run on the Olifants River. The section is suitable for everybody and playboats are welcome, for those bringing non-kayaking friends there will be rafts available for them so that all can go and paddle. We will depart at 08h00 and should be back at the camp grounds around 12h00.
Food and Bev.
There will be food and drinks for sale during the whole festival so you need not worry about bringing your whole kitchen. Food is prepared by some of our local “boere tannies” so you can be sure it will be tasty.
Accommodation: You can choose to bring your tent or stay in one of our dormitories (each dorm has it’s own en-suite ablutions). Camping space is limited, so please book your spot in advance.
