Hornets move into kayak

I have an old fibreglass boat that is sitting upsidedown on a rack about 1.5 metres off the ground. The boat is awaiting repairs and just sort of a back up project,so no rush. I noticed yesrterday that hornets have decided it makes a very nice home. My neighbour Mark pointed it out and it is a good thing he did. The day before I was planning on moving it to a more out of the way location and would have been in for a big surprize had I tried to pick it up. Now I know they are theirContinue

A very lucky paddler

I was just watching this and thought I should post it. Paddler skill levels and safety are always a big issue and this paddler was very lucky.

This just in From Ft.Smith Thanks to Kristen

I just recieved an e-mail notifiying me of a huge landslide on the Slave river at Pelican Rapids. The slide is big and the total extent of it is still unknown and we are suggesting that folks stay out of the area until further notice.

evening paddle

I slipped Sploosh into the Slave and the wind was light but I managed to sail to Burwash point about a kilometer across the bay. I visited Gary he liives on a small house boat there. I then sailed / paddled to the end of Latham Island and down Back Bay . I crossed beneath the Causeway that joins the mainland to Latham Island and paddled back home between Joliffe Island and the mainland. The last half was a nice little into the wind paddle but the winds were light. I saw 4 other kayaks and a c

Great day paddling the Great Slave

Today I slipped "Sploosh" into the chilly waters of great slave and had a great first paddle sail of the year. sploosh is my prijon Seayak on which I run a Pacific Action Kayak sail. WE make a great team. Today was a special event a triple first. Splooshs first bath since fall and my new Kokatat Meridian GMER drysuit and carbon composite paddle got there first use as well. I was pleased with how well everything and wonder now why I hesitated so long in buying a drysuit. I found

paddlin season is open inYellowknife.

The lake is slowly giving way and you can paddle alot of lake shore. Yesterday Naomi, Patrick and myself took a canoe and a seayak to the Yellowknife river bridge and paddled real water. patrick and naomi were very impressed when I managed to convinve them to add some torso rotation to their paddlling strokes. The increase in speed and ease of paddling made them smile quite nicely. They will eventually make good paddlers with some pointing in the right direction. They are willing and try hard

First week of May and the snow is flying

Yellowknife is not the only spot in Canada that is catching some white stuff. Hoping that this cool snap will be very brief as I would like to get on with break up so that the serious paddling can begin.

Last week I was basking in the sun hundreds of miles north of Yellowknife and now we are back to fall. I squeezed in one quick paddle, just enough to discover where the leaks are.

There is open water on the Yellowknife river and this is one of the few times I wish I had a vehicl

Starting to look a lot less like winter.

Yellowknife has been in thaw mode for over a week now. It still hovering around freezing or slighly below when "RA" is down but otherwise every nice. Today the wind was cold but otherwise it was very nice out. The melt water is flowing over the ice now and soon the edges will begin to let go. Bald eagals are arriving back in town, here for the summers fishing once the lake is open. There is enough water at the Joliffe island road approach I might take a boat there and paddle tomorrow. I would be… Continue

Another brisk spring day

This morning was a pleasant-31c and then the sun arrived. Managed a high of -21 for the day and this is spring, This we hope will end shortly but then again it could drag on forever. Last year our summer was incredibly late and even at the end of June, early July parts of Great Slave lake East arm were frozen. We had our Sociable Affair the first week of July at the Yellowknife river bridge and the river was almost freezing. I was doing roll demos and needed every item of neoprene I owned jus

GREG i am still around just had nothing worthwile posting. Bought a new "smartline skin" for my old Aerius 2, it,s lighter than the Hyperlon skins and made of PVC and i intend to try the Klepper S2 sail outfit which is about 50 sq feet, notorius at being blown over perhaps the outriggers will save the day. I took the sail rig off the Triak but it,s still too heavy to lift on the Jeep, i looked on the internet and people with the same problem came up with various lifting devices, i don,t like any i have got a design or i will try and put it on the station wagon which is lower. The 2nd to the 5th of July i,m going on Lake Superior at Neys Provincial Park,

Thanks for the welcome! I lived in Yellowknife in 2005, working for NWTel in the green tower, and do miss the people! It would have been fun to have had a kayak that summer.

Greg,
The boat came that way. It's a 1970's Old Town down river boat made when paisley was the craze. The boat in the picture isn't mine so it's not unique. I'm sure you have lots of winter stuff to do there, but I paddled for the 1st time in a month this morning. 28 and most of the ice is gone.
